I’ve seen plenty AR’s modded at the range, obviously legal, why can’t I even remove my stock w/o committing a felony!?

Your firearms laws in CT are similar to mine here in New York…..
We are only allowed 2 "evil features" on our rifles here…. We can have an AR15 or AK47 with a pistol grip and a box magazine but that’s it?… No bayonets, no collapsible stock, no flash hiders, etc, etc……
Here’s how a few cops and other owners of these rifles have explained it to me how people get away with more that 2 evil feature’s….. The cops aren’t on a witch hunt for this stuff…. On many occasion there are off duty police officers at the range and right next to them is a guy with a fully loaded up AR15 with all the illegal features… They don’t really care…. But they did say this… Lets say you committed some crime and the DA is looking to pile more charges on then they will make a stink about all the bad things your rifle has….. I have been pulled over a couple of times — the cop always asks where you been – I say the gun club – he looks at my "evil rifle" and doesn’t give it a second thought…..
Lets say I committed a white collar crime on the other hand and a search of my house comes up with a rifle with a bayonet and collapsible stock — then they will make a federal case out of the damn thing….. If you look respectable, drive a nice car – live in a nice area then in my experience you wont even be given a second thought….
Dont drive around with your rifle – parade it around like a nut in front of people… and when transporting it – have it in a nice locked case in the trunk then you most likely wont be hassled….
PLEASE do not take what I am telling you as great legal advice — Its not – but this has been my experience concerning this matter…..
Also — For what its worth…. I really do think all that tactical stuff on these rifles is silly nonsense…. Just a full stock or legal collapsable look alike and no bayonets , flash hiders and other useless ornaments are a waste of money….. Being an excellent shot with these rifles is all that matters to me……
Besides — The CZ VZ-58 with a regular stock is a very nice looking rifle just as it is……

An assault rifle has to be capable of fully automatic firing. There is not a state in the nation in which it is a crime to remove the stock from your gun. Please explain more.
An assault rifle by definition is a weapon with a variable rate of fire. (Typically single-shot, 3-round burst, and full auto) Anyone who wants to possess a full-auto weapon must have a Class III license.
The reason that YOU’RE interested in seems to stem from your possession of an imported weapon. You must have a certain number of US made parts to be "compliant" with the law. I forget the parts count but I think its 7 or 8. Often you can stay legal by adding a US-made stock, trigger group, mags, etc, etc.
Your best bet is to do your research on your particular rifle to see WHAT parts you can switch out. Your average gun store or gunsmith might be stumped by a vz58 depending on their experience. The good ones will not though.
By the way I’m in the same boat. I own an AK47 and refuse to add any non-compliant parts that would make my weapon illegal. I like it just the way I bought it anyways. Nice and legal.
Hope this helps!
Official Definition: "An assault rifle is a rifle designed for combat, with selective fire (capable of shooting in both fully automatic and semi automatic modes)."
Please give more details on the specific regulations you’re referring to.
The reason you can’t remove the stock and replace it or put a bayonet on it is because of a law called 922R which regulates exactly what you can do to imported semi-auto rifles. Guns have to have at least 10 compliance parts on it to be legal for import and if you take your stock and replace it with one that is not U.S. made or not compliant you are making it into a gun which is illegal to import which means you can not own it, If you search Bill 922R on the internet it will breakdown 922R’s guidelines better than I can, But the reason AR-15 can be totally changed in configuration is their are made here in the U.S. Hope this helps
Its your gun, you should do whatever you please with it. please go to court for us about it.

Metropol made a good point. I live in CT, and I can assure you that even though you might have a collapsible stock or whatever, no one is going to really look, unless you have done something wrong. You won’t run into any problems unless L.E. gets ahold of it… again, due to your incarceration for an illegal act.
Put a bayonet on there, laser, whatever you want.
As long as it’s not full-auto, it’s not going to attract attention.
