New York State assault weapon laws: what can I do?

August 8th, 2011 · 9 Comments · Stock Assault 2.0 Review Info

Recently honorably discharged from military, qualified on many weapons such as m4, m9, m249. I really like to target shoot assault rifles so I went out and got a ruger mini-14. Now I’m planning on customizing it, i.e.; pistol grip, adjustable butt, folding stock, high capacity magazines… I went online and looked up gun laws and saw that in new york state you can own an assault rifle but not with certain options. Then I went to other sites and saw that the assault rifle ban expired in 2004. My question is what can I do legally to make my mini-14 more like the guns I shot in the military?

The ban expired nationwide in 2004 BUT BUT BUT the great state of New York kept there assault weapons laws on the books…… Take a look….

    http://www.nraila.org/statelawpdfs/NYSL.pdf

You can add a detachable box magazine and pistol grip stock to your Ruger Mini 14…. But thats it! — Do not put a collapsible stock, side folder stock, flash hiders, forward grips with a pistol grip, bayonets or bayonet lugs…..

You are allowed 2 "evil" features and thats it…….

Yes the Ruger Mini 14 has a lot of aftermarket options available but I find most of them are pointless and a waste of money…..

Mine looks exactly like this one in the photo and it works great…… Another one of my minis is the same model but has a scope —

Over the last 25 years I have tried all types of aftermarket tactical widgets and have come to the conclusion they are a waste of money….

you of all people should know that a Mini-14 is not an assault rifle no matter what options you add to it. Yes the Federal assault weapons ban did expire, but New York is a very unfriendly state to gun owners, and what you are experiencing are state laws that prohibit these kinds of weapons that appear similar to military weapons. There is not very much you can do about it. I recommend moving to a free state.

The reality is that a mini-14 is not a true assault rifle it is simply a semi automatic rifle one of the best things you can do is not refer to it as such we need to stop the negative stereotype made by the anti gun groups that our semi auto rifles are so called assault rifles as for New York and their insane gun laws they might have classified the mini-14 as an assault rifle it would be best to check the local laws and see what if any modifications you can make to it I would also suggest working to get the horrific New York gun laws changed I know it would be very hard to do in such a dark blue liberal state like New York but you never know anything can happen I would suggest that you join the NRA if you havent already and write and call your representatives on the state and national levels and pester the hec out of them as well as talk to like minded people who have the same interest as you it would be a long hard battle ahead but you never know anything is possible good luck and thank you for your service to our country

What gun in the military was called a ‘Assault Rifle" by everyone?? When I was in the service…no one….I mean no one called a machine gun or any gun a "Assault Rifle". Us shooters also hate that Clinton and Media term for all semi auto guns.

Honestly…….????? Move..!!! NY is not part of the Union in many peoples eyes…until the corrupt gun grabbing people and government are banished.

    Thank You for your service!

first id like to thank you for what youve done for all of us and this country. unfortunately though, your either going to have to move to a different state or stick to the regular model. its definitely not worth the risk.

You got a handful of states and counties that use the 1994 Assault Weapon Ban as a blue print for their own laws…example is New York.

Anyhow, some of the fun semi-auto rifle features isn’t really necessary on a target rifle. A folding stock for example tends to wobble a great deal which would suck on a target rifle. So you would probably be better off with a fixed stock. And using high cap magazines can sometimes be a pain shooting off a bag as well.

    Be cool and be safe.

New york carries the same ban as the federal one that expired but it is permanent and stricter. The federal ban expired in 2004 but the state has it’s own one. The mini-14 does not fall under it as it doesn’t have any of the "evil" features layed out in the ban.

To be honest you can’t. Because the mini-14 is not used in the US military. I know some foreign police forces use them. But the closest you could get is a semi-auto ar15. If they weren’t already banned in NYS. If you want your m16 or m4 I hope you have $20,000 to throw down because that how much full auto weapons go for in the civilian market.

Your best option: move. Because the stock mini-14 is just legal enough to not be a state felony to own.

There is very little you can do. The chances of getting gun laws changed in NY state with their anti-gun mindset is nil.
