Is changing the stock on my MAK-90 illegal ?

August 20th, 2011 · 3 Comments · Stock Assault 2.0 Review Info

I have a Norinco Sporter Mak90 I bought back in 94. It has a Thumbhole stock and want to replace them with the regular more comfortable pistol grip and stock set as the typical AK’s. Would that be illegal? I know the laws are kind of confusing after that sunset of the whole "assault" rifle thing in 2004. If anybody knows for sure, please provide your source so in case I do, I know how to back it up. I live in Texas. Thanks.

I also have a MAK 90 and wanted to dump the thumbhole. The wood was good looking, but I put a NATO length Tapco set on, as well as changing to US made pistons, trigger group, mags, muzzle brake, etc. Just to make sure I was in 922r compliance, and also to make it better to shoot.

I have several of the eastern Europe AKs and the MAK is by far the best made and finished. Keep it and go crazy with the stuff.

Texas hasn’t continued with the assault rifle ban after the national one expired, however you’ll need to keep your imported parts under 10 (meaning you’ll have to replace some working parts in the gun with US made parts). So you’ll be replacing more than the stock.

What stock are you going with?

You’re legal to change the stock in Tx. Go for it I changed mine on the Mak90 too.
