August 25th, 2011 · 11 Comments · Stock Assault 2.0 Review Info

i was given a old sks assault rifle and i know nothing about it…….i would love to know how much its worth or just any info at all would be nice…….the side is stamped with

norinco/china 76??39 (i cant read the 2 numbers in the middle)
davidson’s greensboro NC

and the other side reads

3 chines letters 18001189

the gun its self is black with a folding stock a bayonet and a fire suppressor on the end……i was given 4 30round clips 1 15round clip and a 10round clip and about 3000 rounds of noncorrosiv ammunition 7.62x39mm 124 gr…….i would love to know how much all of it worth or if it worth selling. it fire’s just fine and it has a couple scratches on it but othere than that its a good looking gun
yes all the mags can be changed out……..and yes it is a assault rifle!!!!!!i can empty a 30 round clip in 10sec….i dont now the exact rate of fire it may be longe than 10 sec but it is fast
i can hold down the trigger and it will keep firing or i can tap the trigger and only one round will come out…….i was told there was an extra piece added to it……..and like i said it was given to me for free
i did not convert it but i will take it off……thank you for telling me i had no idea that that was illegal……

When you say you will take it off and that it is a piece attached to the trigger
You may be talking about a mechanism attached to the trigger that allows for simulated auto fire called a Hellfire or Tap Trigger and it is perfectly legal
They used to sell for around $100 I haven’t seem one in a while
What everyone else said about the assault weapon
While yours may not be a true assault weapon but the trigger adapter sure makes it act like on

The gun itself is worth around $350 these days more if it were unmolested

The mags are worth between $5 and $15 used depending on manufacturer
If they are Tapco they go for about $20 new used about $15
If they are not Tapco they are worth about $5 if you can get them to function consistently

If the mags are AK mags then your gun is an SKS type M and the value of the gun goes up a little more to about $450 to $500 and the mags will be between $10 to $15

The ammo is going for about $250 to $300 per thousand right now when you can find it and if it is Wolf
If it is another maker it may be worth more

    —-
The two nu bers that you can not read are
    2 and X
Meaning 7.62×39-the caliber of the gun

    Davidsons was the importer

My guess is that you have somewhere between a $1200 and $1500 package which will go down each time you shoot the gun and deplete the ammo supply
Ammo is like gold these days

The SKS is a semi-automatic rifle. It is not an "assault rifle".

ITS NOT AN ASSULT RIFLE! sorry but an assult rifle has the ability to change between automatic fire and semi-auto, aka selective fire. the sks can only shoot semi.

  • RDG78

The caliber is 7.62 X 39 mm. This is the same ammunition as used in most of the AK-47 variations on the market today. Are those detachable magazines? That’s uncommon for an SKS. In the current market, that could get you at least $500 with all the accessories, especially all that ammo. hang on to it. It may be some time before you can get another.

I GUARANTEE that someone will come along and try to slap you for using the term "assault rifle." Unless that thing can fire full-auto, it isn’t an assault rifle regardless of what anyone may tell you.

When you say "clip" you mean magazine. Also, the rate of fire has nothing to do with weather or not it is an assault rifle. An assault rifle has a selective fire switch. Unless you have a class 3 license and payed a few thousand for your rifle I highly doubt you have an assault rifle.

You have a semi automatic version of an SKS. For every pull of the trigger 1 round is fired. On an assault rifle you would be able to select full auto and have multiple rounds fired for 1 pull of the trigger.

Here’s a link to an SKS website: http://www.hk94.com/sks-rifle.php

Edit: If you converted your semi-auto to full auto without the proper licenses you have committed a felony.

Edit 2: If it was semi-auto before you put the part on, and full auto afterwards, you converted it.

The first thing you need to know is that an SKS is NOT an assault rifle.

Assuming you’re in the United States, what you describe is a ticket to the penitentiary. If you had a legal full-auto you wouldn’t be so unknowledgeable about it.

  • brianwv64

if it will fire repeatedly with one pull of the trigger than you should have a class III license to own it. It is also illegal for you to sell it to anyone other than a class III license holder.
If you don’t have the license and get caught with this you are looking at 10 years in federal pen.

the first guy bob sums it up. check out that sksboards.com very good lots of info for you!
$500tops more like $400 for a chinese norinco, a stock one about $250-300. for that bubba stuff about $100. The detachable mag is not uncommon. its a cheap $20 convertion. (they can be a pain) they come stock w/a fixed mag that load from the top.
The norinco are the cheapest, then the yugos, the russian are the best because of the collector value.
forget the stamp w/the greensboro. that is the people that got in in the US. since it is bubbad (made to look mean) look for serial #s on the reciever, and bolt, they should match. go in surplusrifles.com they have some good info also.

all the other comments are good so I’m not going to get on you about all that. don’t try doing anthing to it unless you know what you are doing. you’ll mess it up! go to a gunsmith.

Some SKS rifles, although made semi automatic and sold to civilians, sometimes suffer from "bolt slam." Its not extremely common, but the SKS manual that comes with most rifles describes the process for checking your rifle for bolt slam before extensive use. Basically what happens is that when a round is chambered the bolt comes forward so hard that it causes it to fire…this takes place at such a high rate of speed that it appears to be shooting fully automatically. similar to the concept of "bump firing" but cuased in a slightly different way. Guns that suffer from bolt slamming are extremely dangerous and should be repaired by a qualified gunsmith before shooting again.

If someone has indeed converted your SKS to full auto, a relatively simple thing to do, then you should immediately have it converted back to semi auto and destroy the parts that were used to make it full auto. If it was legally done, you would know because you would have gone through mountains of paperwork, waited for months for approval, and paid a lot of fees. You need to have it converted back to semi auto as soon as possible to avoid serious legal problems…especially after letting the whole world know about it on yahoo answers…if someone just gave me a full auto gun, I would have kept my mouth shut about it!

Not an SKS with a magazine for 30 rounds. Maybe an AK-47 knock off.

every on here keeps pointing out that the sks is not a assault rifle…..norinco was one of the first Company hit by the assault rifle ban in the 80s,and the sks was banned from import, i myself purchased one of the norinco paratroopers before the ban new in the box for only 70 bucks, and pre ban ammo use to go for 5 bucks a hundred,
if its not a assult rifle it and the ammo from china sure got hit in the cross fire
